Gender has shown to be a decisive and limiting factor in access to healthcare, particularly for females. This difference in accessibility is closely tied to cultural perceptions surrounding genders such as taboo with the female body/sexuality, gender roles & expectations, income, and education. We explore this further in our research documentary as there is so much to explore!
What is AYUSH you ask? It is an acronym for Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy which are the six Indian systems of Indian medicine, besides allopathy which is considered a more Western perspective on medicine. During this study abroad program, we had the opportunity to meet and converse with many allopathic and eastern medicine physicians -- and not to mention several excursions to sites where each system is practiced.
While in India, we had the wonderful opportunity to view their culture from an inside lens -- trying authentic South Indian food and style of dress. Visiting both rural parts of Mysore and more populated regions (Agra), gave us the opportunity to see great variety within Indian culture as well. We experienced a rare opportunity to intimately experience a foreign culture, and even got the chance to share cultural traditions.
